Leak Points to Samsung Phone With Pop-Up Selfie Camera

It didn’t take long after the first modern smartphones debuted for companies to realize that people wanted bigger screens. Smartphone display sizes have ballooned to proportions previously reserved for tablets, but drive to use the surface area more efficiently has pushed cameras into some strange places. There are notches, punch-holes, and even pop-up cameras. Samsung has experimented with notches and punch holes, and a new leak suggests it’s also planning a pop-up camera.

The latest Samsung tidbit comes by way of OnLeaks, a reliable leaker who creates renders of upcoming phones. The renders are not based on photos or press renders, but instead come from CAD files. Device makers often provide these files to accessory makers and manufacturing partners, and they find their way to OnLeaks. This has made OnLeaks one of the more accurate leakers on the internet, even when a device is months away from release.

This leak is slightly unusual because we don’t know what this alleged Samsung phone is called. Given the overall design and bezel shape, it’s most likely a budget-oriented model in Samsung’s A-series. Whereas most of these phones have notches or hole punches, this one has a pop-up selfie camera on the top edge similar to the OnePlus 7 Pro from 2019.

The unnamed phone has an odd collection of features, too. It has three camera sensors on the back like the more expensive A-series phones. The large “chin” at the bottom of the 6.5-inch display suggests a cheaper LCD rather than OLED, as does the lack of an in-display fingerprint sensor (there’s a traditional sensor on the back). At the same time, adding a mechanism to raise and lower the camera makes for more expensive hardware.

The pop-up mechanism ensures you’ll know if an app is using your camera.

The upshot of this design is that you don’t have any visual disruptions like notches at the top of the screen. The camera is also safely tucked away inside the phone’s body for added security when you’re not using it. However, it’s a moving part that might fail at some point.

The leak speculates that we’re a few months out from an announcement, but we don’t know if it will launch in the US. Many of Samsung’s A-series phones come to Asia and Europe before the US. There’s also no information about specs or features, so maybe you won’t want to hold out for this phone even with that neat pop-up camera.
