Hubble Examines 16 Psyche, the Asteroid Worth $10,000 Quadrillion

The asteroid 16 Psyche (named as such because it was the 16th to be discovered) is believed to be the now-exposed core of a differentiated protoplanet that was smashed apart some billions of years ago. Its composition is generally estimated to be 90 percent metallic and 10 percent silicate rock. It’s thought to be much denser than a typical stony object of equivalent size, and it contains approximately 1 percent of the entire mass of the asteroid belt.

Assuming that the core is made of iron and nickel, the total value of the asteroid (if we ignore the impact on market prices) would be ~$10,000 quadrillion dollars. There’s a NASA mission to 16 Psyche expected to launch in 2022 and arrive in 2026, and the Hubble Space Telescope just spent some time surveying the core fragment. Psyche’s surface composition and what it’s made of have implications for the kinds of scientific tests and instruments that would be loaded on the probe we send to study the asteroid.

The researchers examined Psyche in the ultraviolet — it’s one of just a handful of asteroids to be examined this way — to see if telltale clues about how the light reflected off its surface could reveal details of the asteroid’s internal composition. The data they found generally supports a high iron composition for the object, but they noted that a relatively small amount of iron mixed into rocky materials like olivine can produce Psyche’s ultraviolet signature. This makes it “difficult to quantify the amount of iron that may present on the surface of Psyche.”

Scientists have a number of theories for how Psyche could have formed. It could be the remnant iron core of a protoplanet that was destroyed in a single catastrophic impact. It may be the remnant core of a protoplanet that lost its outer layers in heavy impacts that stripped off the surface but didn’t shatter the entire object. There are a number of theories about its formation, and the research to be done at Psyche will tell us a great deal about the early conditions of the solar system.

The asteroid belt doesn’t actually preserve the remnants of the ancient solar system as they once existed; the material present there today has been reworked and reworked in collision after collision. As we send spacecraft to asteroids like Vesta and dwarf planets like Ceres, we’ve begun to reconstruct the patterns of those collisions. We know now, for example, that a massive collision on asteroid Vesta a billion years ago is responsible for the high number of Vesta asteroids found on Earth.

These ultraviolet analyses of Psyche don’t confirm that the asteroid is an iron-rich core remnant, but they certainly don’t confirm it isn’t (other data gathered on Psyche, like its gravitational impact on other nearby bodies, suggest a very high density). Psyche is the only known metallic core-like body from any planet currently floating around and available to us to access. Put differently: Psyche may represent a scale model of the Earth’s core as it existed during planetary accretion, before gaining enough mass to become a planet.

This process may have failed at Psyche because of higher collision energies. One theory for why the asteroid belt failed to coalesce into a planet is that Jupiter kept gravitational energies too high to support planetary accretion, and the material of the belt was either ejected, pounded to dust, flung inwards (during the Great Heavy Bombardment), or swallowed by Jupiter itself.

The goals of the Psyche mission are to determine if Psyche represents a planetary core or a mass of previously unmelted material, to gather information on its age, to examine the compositional differences between the minerals in Psyche’s core and the expected contents of Earth’s, to determine the conditions under which it formed, and to characterize its overall topography.

There are currently no serious plans to mine Psyche, but if Earth were to begin to colonize the outer solar system (as shown in TV shows like The Expanse), there’s no question that we’d end up tapping the asteroid for material in one way or another. It’s a rock that could teach us about the earliest days of our solar system, while providing the raw materials we’ll need to create its future.

Google Pixel Slate Owners Report Failing Flash Storage

Google released the Pixel Slate with much fanfare in late 2018, bringing to fruition its efforts to optimize Chrome OS for the tablet form factor. The device sold boatloads and finally solidified Google’s position in the tablet market. Actually, no — the Pixel Slate sold so poorly that Google has washed its hands of it. Some people did buy it, though, and now many of them are reporting storage failures that make their tablets unusable. 

According to a new report from Android Police, Google’s product support forums are flooded with angry Pixel Slate owners who say their devices are running into frequent, crippling storage errors. The failures begin as brief hiccups like crashing apps and icons becoming grayed out and inactive. A reboot or factory reset (Chrome calls this a Powerwash) might alleviate the issues for a short time, but they always come back. This isn’t a software issue — it’s hardware. 

After a time of worsening issues, the Slate will apparently stop accepting any new writes to the flash storage. Slate owners have captured error logs, showing the system remounting in read-only mode after repeated failures. That means you can’t write any new information to the device, which breaks almost everything. 

Because of the nature of this hardware issue, there’s probably no way Google can address it in a system update. Even in the unlikely event Google could circumvent the storage glitch to make the device usable, you can’t install an update on a device in read-only mode. That’s already a lot of big “ifs” before you even consider Google’s attitude toward tablets — it gave up.  

The Pixel Slate was supposed to be Google’s way back into tablets after it backed off on its Android slate plans. In advance of the release, Google beefed up the tablet features of Chrome OS, which benefited the convertibles already on the market. However, the transformation was incomplete, and the versions with decent processors cost nearly a grand when you added the keyboard dock. Without a keyboard, the Slate wasn’t in the same league as the iPad. With the keyboard attached, the Slate barely competed with similarly priced laptop-style Chromebooks. 

That’s why Google doesn’t plan to make any more tablets for the time being. How much effort is it really going to expend to fix such a maligned product? Probably not much, and many of those affected are long outside their warranty period. Google is investigating the issue, but this might end up being one of those long-running class-action lawsuits that deliver a pittance to affected customers in a few years.

Third-Party Repair Shops May Be Blocked From Servicing iPhone 12 Camera

Apple is no fan of third-party repairs. This attitude is partly the result of a corporate culture that prioritizes total control of the iDevice ecosystem and partly economic. The more Apple services you pay for, the more revenue Apple makes. Service revenue has become a critical part of the company’s business and overall revenue from the segment has been growing at a brisk pace.

According to a recent article by Kevin Purdy of iFixit, Apple’s hostility to the right of repair has hit new heights with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. Purdy writes that repeated iFixit testing of the iPhone 12 has revealed that the camera assembly of one phone cannot be swapped into a different, identical device.

Initially, iFixit gave the iPhone 12a 6/10 for repairability, but further testing of the camera gave it reason to dig deeper. Purdy describes it as: “It refuses to switch to the ultrawide camera, responds only to certain camera modes, and occasionally hangs and becomes completely unresponsive.” This problem seems to be unique to the iPhone 12; the iPhone 12 Pro doesn’t appear to have a problem. But given that iFixit is not the only site to encounter this issue, it’s clearly more than just a one-off bug.

The reason iFixit suspects this may be more than a simple mistake is because Apple has updated the training guides for iPhone 12 repair to require its System Configuration app in order to make repairs to the battery, display, or camera. Previous iPhones only required this software for battery swaps:

Purdy then steps through Apple’s long history of throwing up roadblocks to make life more difficult for DIYers and small shops and notes that unlike Face ID or Touch ID, putting a lockout on the camera serves no useful security purpose whatsoever. “Putting an authentication check on a simple camera swap poisons the iPhone repair and resale market,” Purdy writes. “With no obvious benefit for iPhone buyers, it reeks of greed. Or worse: planned obsolescence.”

Apple has switched from trying to grow the iPhone addressable market to focus on extracting the maximum amount of revenue per customer. This isn’t unusual — it’s what every successful company pivots towards in one way or another over time. Eventually, everyone who is going to buy your stuff already has, and it’s time to shift business models. But Apple isn’t just looking to generate revenue by improving its services or making better TV shows — it’s locking out the ability of individuals to repair their own devices without paying Apple to do it.

Time and time again, we see concrete, specific reasons why Right to Repair legislation is necessary. It’s possible that this is just a mistake on Apple’s part, but whether it is or it isn’t, Apple is currently under no obligation to fix it. The company has been playing both sides of the field for years, protesting to DIYers that no, it really cares, while pushing at every opportunity to limit the right of end-users to repair their devices without being fed FUD at every opportunity.
